Assisted Living vs. Memory Care

They look similar from the outside, but they’re built for different needs. Here’s how to tell which one fits — and when it’s time to move from one to the other.

Updated July 2026 · Oklahoma Senior Placement

Both assisted living and memory care provide housing, meals, and help with daily life. The difference comes down to memory. Assisted living is for seniors who mostly need a hand with everyday tasks. Memory care is a specialized, secure setting for people living with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia — with staff trained specifically to support them.

Signs it may be time for memory care

Many families start in assisted living and move to memory care as dementia progresses. It may be time to consider memory care if your loved one is:

  • Wandering, getting lost, or trying to leave (exit-seeking)
  • Becoming confused, agitated, or anxious — especially late in the day ("sundowning")
  • Forgetting to eat, take medications, or turn off the stove
  • No longer safe living alone, even with help dropping in
  • Withdrawing, or having trouble with the pace and social demands of assisted living
  • Wearing out a spouse or family caregiver who can't safely manage anymore

If several of these sound familiar, it's worth a conversation. Memory care isn't about giving up independence — it's a setting designed so someone with dementia can be safe, calm, and engaged.

What about a community that offers both?

Some Oklahoma communities offer assisted living and memory care on the same campus. That can make a future transition smoother — a familiar building, and sometimes familiar faces. It's one of the things we help families weigh when there's a dementia diagnosis or one on the horizon.
